Welcome to TrapSheet
That origin story post all but officially mandatory when starting a Substack
Why I’ve launched TrapSheet
I’ve been writing about the NFL online since 2008, after stops — in chronological order — at Bleacher Report, Yahoo! Sports, FOX Sports, NFL.com, The Buffalo News, SB Nation, and for the past eight seasons, CBS Sports, I’ve ventured out on my own.
1. Why this, why now
OK, so CBS Sports eliminated my position ahead of the 2025 season. But I’m here. You’re here. Grab an oxygen tank. We’ll be diving deep on the NFL all year long, together.
2. The community I’m aspiring to build is…
…one that craves informative analysis on NFL players, draft prospects, teams, GMs, coordinators, coaches, team-building processes, free agency, and more. And this community is also one that typically wants discernibly more than haphazardly assembled opinions without numbers or full-scale systems to support them.
TL;DR: Takes with built-in receipts
3. Also…
On that note… I can’t promise I’ll do this with every single article I write here, but I plan to invent systems, rubrics, formulas, grading scales etc — often with funky and/or cheesy names — in the majority of my pieces on TrapSheet.
I want to be as transparent and easy to agree/disagree with as possible. I hope you like numbers, because they’ll be incorporated heavily here, especially during the NFL Draft.
*Vitally, you don’t have to be a data scientist — I sure as hell am not one — to enjoy reading TrapSheet (and hopefully learn something along the way)
